LITTLETON – Writing about both the positive and negative aspects of military family life can serve as both a creative outlet and a therapeutic activity and to facilitate such creative healing, Arapahoe Community College will offer “We Served/We Also Served Writing Workshop for Veterans and Families of Veterans,” a free workshop for veterans and their families, May 9.
By sharing their stories with the wider public, the U.S. culture can come to more fully understand the realities experienced not only by those who serve in the military, but also by their families.
Veterans will be in a discussion and a writing group led by veteran Nate Jordan. Family members will be in a group led by “military brat” Diana Serquina. Each group will examine literature surrounding combat, leading into discussions and writing that reflects on military service and the communities affected by it.
Diana K. Serquina has a master’s degree in fine arts from Naropa University in 2009 and a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Nebraska in 1992. She has been writing professionally since 1994 and is the founder and editor of Poetic Justice, a Web site for social justice writing. She writes a monthly parenting column for the Great Falls Tribune and has written for other newspapers, magazines and online publications including the UU World, Brew and PC Novice. In addition to her writing background, Serquina was a "military brat" whose father served in the Air Force. She is working towards becoming a Certified Applied Poetry Facilitator and has experience facilitating writing workshops for both children and adults.
Publisher, writer, editor and raconteur Nate Jordon is a self-proclaimed life-aholic. He holds a bachelor’s degree in English from California State University and a master’s degree in fine arts in writing and poetics from the Jack Kerouac School of Naropa University. He is the founder of Monkey Puzzle Press and Magazine. His poetry and prose appear in various periodicals and journals.
The workshop will be held May 9, (Mother’s Day) from 1 to 3 p.m. in ACC’s Half Moon, Room M1800.
