ACC Students to Participate in Music and Speech Events

LITTLETON – Arapahoe Community College students will participate in music and speech events next week ranging from a musical scenes concert to a speech competition.

The Arapahoe Community College Pop/Rock Ensemble and its director, Michael Engberg, will perform at a benefit on April 27 at the D-Note in Olde Town Arvada, 7519 Grandview Avenue. The event will benefit Brad Bailey, former assistant city attorney for the City of Littleton, who has stage IV melanoma cancer.

The Arapahoe Community College Pop/Rock Ensemble will perform at 9 p.m. Originally started by well-known local musician Chris Daniels, the ensemble is a class that meets each semester at ACC. This semester, the group’s repertoire includes Buddy Holly, Beatles, Green Day, The Sex Pistols, Bare Naked Ladies, Pearl Jam, AC/DC and more.

A $10+ donation is requested at the door, and all proceeds will benefit the Bailey family. The show also will feature Michael Engberg at 6 p.m. He has been a part of the Front Range music scene for nearly 20 years. A winner of the Newfolk Songwriting Competition at the Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas, he has three CD’s released on his own. He has also been an adjunct professor of music at Arapahoe Community College for the last 10 years, teaching guitar, music theory and music business and directing the ACC Pop/Rock Ensemble.

On April 29, the ACC Opera and Musical Scenes class will perform scenes from Titanic, Fiddler on the Roof, Grease, Miss Saigon, Legally Blonde, Gypsy, The Mikado, Wonderful Town and Chorus Line in the Waring Theatre. The performance is free and open to the public. The group is directed by Mayumi Yotsumoto and accompanied by Melody Chang, both ACC Music instructors.

30, ACC students will participate in the annual speech competition. It will be from noon to 3 p.m. Family and friends are welcome to attend to observe the competition or to cheer on their favorite public speaking student or classmate.

Each participant will receive a gift bag with food, gift cards, T-shirts and assorted ACC logo gifts. So far 14 participants have signed up. Those interested in participating should see their public speaking instructor for details. The ACC main campus is at 5900 S. Santa Fe Drive, located on the east side of Santa Fe at College Drive.
